Ballinakella Press was founded by Hugh Weir and his wife, Grania, following Hugh's initial, somewhat amateur publication of Lady Swinfen's first book, documenting her expertise on donkeys in County Clare. This was soon followed by Hal Price's brief 1974 account of his experiences as one of the eight crew members on the Tai-Ki Expedition from Hong Kong, and Hugh's own Hall Craig: Words on an Irish House (1979). Since then, this small private press has continued to publish books of Irish historical, topographical, genealogical, biographical, and architectural significance.
Since 2017, Their son Tomás has assumed the responsibility of managing the business. With a strong commitment to its growth and continued success, he is dedicated to advancing the legacy established by his parents. Tomás is actively refining our publications, focusing on enhancing both the quality and scope of the content. His vision includes expanding our reach, introducing new projects, and ensuring that our publishing standards are continuously improved to meet the evolving demands of our audience. Through these efforts, he aims to build upon the foundation laid by Hugh and Grania, ensuring that Ballinakella Press remains a respected and influential name in Irish historical and cultural publishing.
